What is Change Management Training?
Change management training typically consists of change and transition theory as well as experiential learning activities designed to stimulate participants to develop a greater understanding of change, why it is important, and ways to manage it. In many cases related topics are also included in the intervention. These topics may include but not be limited to, communications, trust, and conflict-resolution.
Our employees face change often and honestly they just don't handle it very well. Will this training help?
Discovery of organization needs for change management training will vary. It is not appropriate to assume the possible outcomes of a training event without some level of understanding or background of the clients particular situation. However it could be considered acceptable to assume that some intervention is better than no intervention at all. This of course depends on the type of training and the skills of the trainer. A good trainer will have the ability to facilitate and guide the discovery process while emphasizing areas requiring more understanding during the intervention. Organizations should always consider assessing their needs prior to an in-depth intervention.
Our employees resist change regardless how effectively we communicate the need to change. Should we try this type of training or look at a different intervention?
No two situations are alike. There may be many reasons why employees are resisting change efforts. Much of the resistance we would label as "human nature." If you are confident that the communication is effective but still the employees are not embracing change a one-half day consultation would probably be an appropriate course of action. During this consultation we would work with a pre-selected group of employees and assess the individuals and/or groups to help determine root causes of the resistance. This may lead to recommendations for more in-depth assessment or interventions for individuals, groups, or the entire organization.
We don't have the time or financial resources for an assessment. Can't we just get some training?
Training interventions can be applied to many situations. Typically it is not harmful to apply training interventions however, you would not consider back surgery for a tooth ache. High-level assessment activities can be completed with only a few hours of on-site work. Consider (even if it is limited) some form of assessment before just jumping in. As always every situation is different and if your organization is experiencing a lot of change, change management training may help reduce employee problems.
